Habits can be difficult to break, but when you have goals such as growth or health for your hair, there are some habits that really need to go. Here are five bad habits that damage your hair.
1. Going to bed without wrapping your hair. You’re exhausted by the time you’re going to bed, I understand that. But take care of your hair and grab a satin cap before you conk out for the night. At the very least, use a satin pillowcase. This will protect your hair and help keep its natural oils in place, protecting your tresses from persistent dryness.
2. Rushing through styling and detangling.
Rushing through these processes makes it too easy to be overly rough and rip out tangles. To detangle stubborn knots, start at the ends of your strands and work your way up to the roots.
3. Hand-in-head syndrome. Over manipulation!
Too many of us have our hands chronically in our hair. Constantly playing in your hair or trying every new style you come across causes unnecessary stress to your hair, which will eventually cause it to weaken and break. Instead, come up with a reliable regimen and use protective styles often.
4. Not cleaning your brush.
If you haven’t cleaned your brush lately, it’s surely covered with hair, oil and product build-up. It’s the perfect place for bacteria to multiply, so clean your brush every few weeks with baking soda and warm water.
5. Expecting too much.
This may be the worst habit of them all. The natural community is constantly growing and there are so many beautiful heads of hair to get mesmerized by. Hair crushes are normal but remember that everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another. It takes time for hair to grow and become healthy, especially if you are coming from a place of damage. Give yourself a break from the online communities if you need to.
Stay away from these five bad habits that damage your hair and you’ll soon see how your hair will love you for it!
My grandmother showed me how to love and care for my hair. There's too much pressure out in the mainstream to go straight. Truth is, I love my hair nappy and free.
