Postpartum hair loss refers to the sudden shedding of hair within one year of giving birth, with no other symptoms. Many women notice that during pregnancy, their hair turns thick and lush, like it has never been before. This is due to the surge of pregnancy hormones, but when your hormone levels return to normal, your hair probably will, too. Breastfeeding your baby may stave off the hair loss until you wean your baby.
Postpartum hair loss is one of the many normal responses that your body many undergo, usually within the first year after you give birth. You really can’t do much to prevent this, but you can use different gels, custards and lotions to make your hair look more full and to bring out your curl.
Take good care of your hair during this time! Keep it well moisturized and use a protein treatment every few weeks. It can definitely be difficult to give your hair the pampering it deserves when you have a new infant, but do what you can and you’ll be happy about it later. Be extra gentle with your hair and continue to take your prenatal vitamins. If your hair loss is really excessive, though, get yourself checked out by your doctor, since you may have a problem with your thyroid.
Think of dealing with postpartum hair loss as a transitional time. It’s unpleasant and annoying, but as long as you take care of your tresses, your hair should be back to normal by the time your little sweetheart is making a big mess in his first birthday cake.
