Olive oil is a natural moisturizer that’s also helpful for dandruff and scalp inflammation. It penetrates into the strands of your hair better than many other oils and is high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, an antioxidant vital for hair growth. It is widely available and ideal for sensitive skin and hair.
To get started with your olive oil treatment, wash your hair well. Then, heat up your olive oil in a water bath, which is easy to do. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan. Place the olive oil in a bowl or mug and place the bowl in water, allowing it to gently warm up. You can also place about a half of a cup of oil into a microwave safe bowl and warm it up that way. The olive oil should be warm but not too hot to the touch.
While your hair is damp, section it off and dip your fingers into the warm oil, massaging it well into each section, starting at the roots of your hair. Heat a towel by placing it in water and then into the microwave for 20 seconds. Then, wrap the warm towel over your hair and place a plastic cap over the towel to keep the heat in. Keep the towel on your head for at least half an hour or overnight. You can also sit under a hooded dryer set on warm for about a half an hour, instead of using a towel and plastic cap.
After your DIY olive oil hair treatment, wash and condition your hair as you usually would. You should notice instantly how soft and manageable your hair is. Repeat your hot oil treatment once a month for best results. You can experiment with adding coconut, almond, jojoba and other oils to see how they affect your hair. Coconut oil is great if your hair is dry and jojoba is fantastic for those of us with finer strands.
