Celebrity big chop social media reveals are fun. They’re an opportunity to celebrate black women who dare to shave it all and rock their natural texture, which is still a very counter cultural beauty move. But model Winnie Harlow disappointingly and inexplicably used her big chop reveal to throw shade at South Sudanese model Nyadak Thot, aka Duckie, and it wasn’t long before the big chop itself was overshadowed, and then totally eclipsed by the drama that followed. So how did this all start? Over the weekend Winnie posted to Snapchat and Instagram revealing her cute new cut. Her sister,
The Independent Black British hair magazine Blackhair recently featured an English-Malaysian model on its December/January 2017 cover. This might have gone unnoticed since the model, Emily Bador, was styled with a curly red wig and could easily pass for a black or a part-black multiracial woman. There was a time when heat damage was actually a goal of some women – nicknamed “heat training,” it was a method that included consistently straightening one’s hair in order to achieve looser, “more manageable” curls. While some women were able to achieve the hair texture they were in search of, it left a lot of people with limp, uneven curls. Others also experienced heat damage by accident from straightening, constant blow drying, or straightening their leave out while protective styling. But many black women are now sharing their stories of growing out their heat damage and showing off their
No matter what choice we make for our hair, black women will never escape some form of criticism. If we choose to wear our hair natural it’s deemed as “unprofessional” in some spaces. If we wear relaxers we are called self-haters and if you wear weaves watch out! Some keyboard warriors have even coined women who wear weaves as “hair hats”, a term I have a big issue with, but I will get to this shortly. Firstly, yes, there are some women who feel insecure without wearing weaves, but in and of themselves they are not a form of self hate. Otherwise everyone
Cuba First Natural Hair Competition to Promote Black Pride Havana performance artist, Susana Delahante held a black hair competition in Cuba this past weekend. Black and mixed-race women were invited to compete in three hair categories – natural, braided and dreadlocked. The two hour competition which had over 70 contestants was described as an effort to bolster pride within the Afro-Cuban community. Delahante states: “I wanted to do something that legitimized my hair, this undervalued type of hair.” According to the 2012 census, 64% of Cubans identified themselves as white, 23% as biracial and only 9.3% as black. Sociologists have
